Since the late 1836, in the café ‘at archduke Maximilian’, which Dubrovnik habitants called ‘u Birimise’ it was the favorite place to come and read newspapers while enjoying coffee or tea. Continuing the tradition of literary cafes, Dubravka café still keeps the original Birimisa’s idea - to read, discuss and write in the café.
As now, like in the old times, it was a sort of tradition to come on Sunday or on holiday with a family to enjoy ice cream. But the difference is that in past times, the ice for the ice cream was being delivered from the mount of Snjeznica, in Konavle, from the special wells that peasants from Konavle filled with snow during the winter time.
Higher class society members and intellectuals of all ages usually were coming here on Sunday mornings. Over the long period of years, café Dubravka was the center of business and social gathering. The guests arriving with horse driven omnibuses from Gruz were greeted, as well as guests arriving with a tram yet from 1910.
Besides coffee, tea and similar beverages, Dubravka offered dry figs and candied fruits. |
