As far back as the 1836 in the café "At the Archduke Maximilian’s," by the people of Dubrovnik affectionately called "At Birimiša’s" people used to come to read the newspaper with morning coffee or tea. Continuing the tradition of literary cafes, the today’s Café ‘’Dubravka 1836" has continuously preserved the Birimiša’ s idea to make it a place where people would read, discuss and write.
And "At Birimiša’s", the same as today, gentlemen used to go on Sundays and holidays with their ladies and family for ice cream. At that time the ice was transported from the mountain of Snježnica in the Konavle region from special wells that Konavle peasants in winter filled with snow. Today Dubravka is famous for its homemade ice cream, which in the summer months refreshes the habitants of Dubrovnik and their guests.
On Sunday mornings, the better society members and intellectuals of all generations used to come to the café. In the course of many years the coffee house "Dubravka" was in the centre of business and social gatherings, horse-drawn buses from Gruž were waited for and welcomed, and later on guests coming by tram.
At that time along with coffee, tea and other drinks, candied fruit and dried figs were also offered for refreshment.
